The Oregon Board of Tax Practitioners (OBTP) protects consumers by ensuring tax practitioners are competent and ethical when they prepare federal and state personal income taxes. The board was formed in 1972 to license tax preparers and tax consultants, create and administer examinations testing tax knowledge and preparation skills, and investigate complaints from consumers.
As tax laws have become more complex, the board’s roles have expanded. OBTP provides continuing education to licensees and reviews applications from education providers to ensure quality content and presentation of materials. OBTP helps Oregonians feel confident that they receive accurate tax advice and prompt filing of their personal returns by encouraging professional responsibility of its licensees and providing assistance on compliance issues.
