Geologist Examiners, State Board of

The purpose of the State Board of Geologist Examiners, established in 1977, is to safeguard the health, welfare and property of Oregonians affected by the geologic fields of ground water, land-use planning, mineral exploration and development, geologic hazards and the further development of the science of geology through the regulation of professional practice.

The board evaluates qualifications, examines and registers geologists, certifies those with engineering geology specialty, and suspends, revokes or refuses to renew registration or certification, and assesses civil penalties when warranted. The board practices cooperative registration with other states that register geologists. More than 1,000 geologists are registered in Oregon, with nearly 250 also holding an engineering geology certification.
