105 years with the interstate bridge

Abstract/Description: The Interstate Bridge opened on February 14, 1917 amid much fanfare. It cost travelers -- both vehicles and horses! -- five cents to cross the bridge. There were two lanes of traffic, one in each direction, as well as a streetcar. Today we celebrate the bridge's birthday and acknowledge that the original span is 105 years old -- and not built for the needs of today's travelers. It's time we replaced the aging Interstate Bridge with a modern, seismically resilient, multimodal structure.
