Grave Creek covered bridge

This covered bridge over Grave Creek in Josephine County, Oregon, is a 105 foot Howe truss design built in 1920 (completed on January 24, 1921) at a cost (including engineering) of $21,128.65. The bridge has six gothic style windows on each side, and a steel roof. In the late 1990s, extensive repairs were made and the portal openings were made more rounded than in this photograph. The bridge is just off route I-5 at the Sunny Valley exit, about 15 miles north of Grants Pass. It resides in an rural valley where early pioneers collided with American Indians while seeking a route to the Oregon Territory. The name comes from an event wherein a young woman, Martha Leland Crowley, in one of the caravans died and was buried at the crossing in 1846., Courtesy of State Library of Oregon.
